Hush little baby

I had this Nursery Rhyme in my head this morning, as I hummed it and thought of the words …

“Hush little baby, don’t say a word,
Papa’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird won’t sing,
Papa’s gonna buy you a diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring turns to brass,
Papa’s gonna buy you a looking glass.
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Papa’s gonna buy you a billy goat.
And if that billy goat won’t pull,
Papa’s gonna buy you a cart and bull.
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Papa’s gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
And if that dog named Rover won’t bark,
Papa’s gonna buy you a horse and cart.
And if that horse and cart fall down,
You’ll still be the sweetest little baby in town!”

I used to always sing this to my girls, as I put them to sleep at night when they were younger. Except, I changed the word “Papa” to “Mama”, and at the end of it, I changed it to my own words to say, “And if that dog named Rover runs away, Mama’s gonna buy you another today.

I think of this Rhyme today, and I realize that this really doesn’t make sense (in my honest opinion). It’s a nursery rhyme to make children feel better, but the fact of the matter is – parents cannot buy pain away from children. Buying “things” to make children feel better is not the solution to any problem. And to put it rather bluntly, why would I want to “hush” my child? Honestly, why would I tell my child to “be quiet”? It’s like saying – “it doesn’t matter”.

But wait, it DOES matter!!!Thoughts matter.Words matter.

I admit, I was thinking of saying this to my daughter this morning before she went off to school, as she was having a bit of a rough morning. But then I stopped myself in my tracks and instead, kissed her and told her I loved her, unconditionally, and to have a beautiful day!

You see, I don’t want to “hush” her. I want her to talk to me, and to share all of her thoughts with me, so that we can sort out her tangled mind. I don’t want any of my children to remain silent, but rather, to be open about what’s troubling them, and also what’s making them super excited!! You know what I mean?
As a mom, I want to be there for my children, just like my mom was. I want them to know that I can be their best friend and that they can talk openly to me. I don’t ever want them to think otherwise. So why would I sing, “Hush Little Baby”?!! Here’s the thing…
I can’t promise them:
a Mocking Bird
a Diamond Ring
a Looking Glass
a Billy Goat
a Cart and Bull
a Dog named Rover
a Horse and Cart

But, I can promise them:
My Unconditional Love
My Heart
My Support
My Guidance

It’s all about taking just a few seconds out of your day to have a laugh, have a sing, have a dance! It doesn’t matter how bad your day was, how bad you look, sing, or dance!!

What matters is LETTING GO and just being YOU – and living IN THE moment!!
Spend time with the people who mean the most to you, and make sure you grasp the moments for as long as you can! It sure can change the course of your day!!❤️
“Let’s untangle our mind, and set it free…”
